Message from the CEO

On March 14th Suncoast Mental Health Center CEO Art Ciasca, Suncoast Board Member Frank Jencik, Indian River County Sheriff’s Sergeant Eric Flowers, and Indian River School District Teacher Mary Jones met with Representative Heather Fitzenhagen of Ft. Myers.  Fitzenhagen is the sponsor of House Bill 451, Rebecca’s Law.  Rebecca’s Law is named after Rebecca Sedgwick, the 12 year old middle school student who ended her life after repeated instances of being bullied.  The law aims to create consequences for those who bully others.  Representative Fitzenhagen was presented a binder of posters about bullying from Storm Grove Middle School Students.

Suncoast Mental Health Center, the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office, the Indian River County School District, and the Indian River County Boys and Girls Club recently collaborated to present “Bullying Stops Here” in Vero Beach.   The event had over 120 parents and children in attendance.  The presenters spoke of the effects of bullying on children’s mental and physical health, school performance, and legal considerations.
